Only one musician this year has had the confidence to know they could fill Australian stadiums on their own. Come on down, Nashville’s 23-year-old country music princess-turned-pop megastar, Taylor Swift.

Swift kicks off her Australian tour in front of up to 40,000 fans tonight in Sydney and is expected to play in front of more than 45,000 at Etihad Stadium in 10 days’ time. While Pink sold more tickets this year, her shows were in smaller arenas; Swift is the first woman since Madonna 20 years ago to undertake a solo stadium tour of this country. “When I heard that statistic, it absolutely blew my mind,” Swift told Fairfax Media from her Beverly Hills hotel room.

While she might be a little too wholesome for some – after her Auckland show last Friday, New Zealand reviewer Kashka Tunstall wrote that Swift’s sincerity was “so emotionally heavy and heartbreaking that my ovaries felt on the verge of exploding throughout the night” – she is without doubt a panacea to all the simulated shagging on stage that her contemporaries have gorged themselves on in 2013. Swift even admits she winds down after a show by “watching Friends DVDs”.

Somehow we cannot see Miley Cyrus doing that, not that Swift is going to dish the dirt: “Everybody has a different back story and comes from a different place, so for me I just try to stick to living my life the way that I would be proud of if I was looking back when I was older.”

So the new Queen of Pop is also the Queen of Clean but there’s more to her appeal: she’s a young woman firmly in control. Swift’s focus on her career over her love-life has been writ large, plenty of heart-throbs have been cast aside and found their way back into her songs: One Direction’s Harry Styles, Twilight’s Taylor Lautner, chart-topping bluesman John Mayer.

“One of my great challenges has been remaining vulnerable enough to write songs about my life when I know those songs are going to be dissected for tabloid fodder, but some of my job has to be not thinking about things I can’t control.”

So what can fans expect from her ”Red” tour shows – the sets for which are so large and so numerous they had to be transported by boat?

“We have huge set pieces and fire and smoke and giant things that come down and then disappear and then people popping up out of the floor and people on wires, so it’s a crazy show. You have no idea how excited I am to bring that to stadiums in Australia.”

The Country Music Association (CMA) has honoured Taylor Swift with its Pinnacle Award, despite the singer’s shift towards mainstream pop.

The prize is presented to artists who have taken country music to a worldwide audience. The only other previous winner of the Pinnacle is Garth Brooks, who received the accolade in 2005.

The 23-year-old singer was surprised on stage at the 47th annual award ceremony in Nashville, by six country stars that she had opened for as a teenager, including George Strait, winner of the CMA entertainer of the year award for the third time. A video featuring messages from stars including Mick Jagger, Justin Timberlake, Julia Roberts and Carly Simon was played to congratulate the young winner on her achievement.

“I didn’t know there was going to be all this,” Swift said. “You’ve made me feel so special right now.”

The Pennsylvania-born star performed an acoustic version of her hit Red with Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Sam Bush earlier in the three-hour ceremony, which was shown live on ABC in the US and hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley for the sixth year running.
