The Country Music Association (CMA) has honoured Taylor Swift with its Pinnacle Award, despite the singer’s shift towards mainstream pop.
The prize is presented to artists who have taken country music to a worldwide audience. The only other previous winner of the Pinnacle is Garth Brooks, who received the accolade in 2005.
The 23-year-old singer was surprised on stage at the 47th annual award ceremony in Nashville, by six country stars that she had opened for as a teenager, including George Strait, winner of the CMA entertainer of the year award for the third time. A video featuring messages from stars including Mick Jagger, Justin Timberlake, Julia Roberts and Carly Simon was played to congratulate the young winner on her achievement.
“I didn’t know there was going to be all this,” Swift said. “You’ve made me feel so special right now.”
The Pennsylvania-born star performed an acoustic version of her hit Red with Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Sam Bush earlier in the three-hour ceremony, which was shown live on ABC in the US and hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley for the sixth year running.

The North American portion of The Red Tour saw Taylor play to more than 1.36 million fans over 66 shows (including 13 stadium stops) in 47 cities in 29 states and 3 provinces. On a number of these nights Taylor was notably joined on stage by some very special guests for an array of show-stopping collaborations – from Jennifer Lopez and Ellie Goulding at Staples Center in LA through to Carly Simon at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Taylor’s THE RED TOUR performance features two multi-level stages, elaborate costumes, dancers, aerialists and numerous changing sets, giving everyone in the venue an excellent seat. Taylor plays electric guitar, banjo, piano and acoustic guitar during the show, and her set features numerous songs from her record breaking album, RED, in addition to new takes on several fan favourites.
This November will see Taylor take THE RED TOUR to Australia and New Zealand, where she will become the first solo female artist in 20 years to undertake a national stadium tour of Australia, with the last being Madonna’s Girlie Show tour in 1993.
Taylor’s fourth studio album, RED, reached no 1 at iTunes in over 50 countries around the globe. RED has sold over half a million copies and spawned 4 top 10 singles in the UK alone. In the US, RED is certified 4 x Platinum, while worldwide it has sold in excess of 5.8 million. With RED Taylor becomes the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at no. 1 in the US charts with three consecutive studio albums.
